# Can’t afford the vet? Where to get help in Vancouver

**If your dog may need emergency care, call a veterinarian now.** If your regular clinic is closed, one Vancouver option is **[Atlas Animal Hospital, 604-301-0300](tel:+16043010300)**, which the Vancouver Humane Society lists as a 24-hour hospital. Tell the clinic what is happening and that cost is a concern. Ask whether you should come straight in. [See the Humane Society’s emergency vet list.](https://vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca/vet-assist/)

You don’t need a diagnosis or a finished funding application to make that call. You can say: **“My dog started [describe what you noticed] about [how long ago]. I’m worried about the cost. Does my dog need to come in now, and what should I expect to pay for the first visit?”**

## If your dog needs life-saving treatment

The Vancouver Humane Society’s **McVitie Veterinary Assistance Program** helps low-income BC residents who cannot afford all or part of immediately life-saving care. **To be considered, submit the application before treatment. Once you’ve applied, don’t delay life-saving care while waiting for a reply.** The society can assess an application submitted before the procedure even if your dog has already received care by the time staff respond.

[Apply to the McVitie Fund here.](https://vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca/vet-assist/) Have proof of income, a photo of your dog and a short account of what happened ready. Ask the clinic for a written estimate. If you need help with the application, **[604-336-1390](tel:+16043361390)** is voicemail only, and funding decisions are not made on weekends or statutory holidays. If approved, the fund pays the clinic directly. Ask the clinic what portion you would still owe.

## If your dog needs care but it can be scheduled

**For a Vancouver appointment:** Call the [BC SPCA Vancouver Animal Hospital](https://spca.bc.ca/locations/bcspca-hospital/) at **[604-879-3571](tel:+16048793571)**. It’s a public, nonprofit veterinary hospital at **1205 East 7th Avenue**. Before travelling, ask what the exam costs, whether financial assistance is available for the service your dog needs, and what proof of income to bring.

**If you can get to Richmond:** [RAPS Animal Hospital](https://rapsanimalhospital.com/community-impact/application-for-community-vet-assistance/) considers subsidies for treatment **at its own hospital**. Help may cover only part of the bill. For a planned procedure, allow **five to ten business days** for a reply and arrange for your dog’s medical records to be sent to RAPS. For an urgent concern, call **[604-242-1666](tel:+16042421666)** instead of waiting for the online form.

**If your vet recommends a necessary procedure that isn’t an emergency:** The [National Pet Care Fund](https://nationalpetcarefund.com/faqs/) uses a two-step application. First, apply as a pet owner using your current CRA Notice of Assessment. Once approved, apply for help with the specific procedure. The fund may cover half the approved cost, up to **$250**, with up to **$250 more** from a participating clinic. Ask your clinic whether it participates before counting on that contribution. **The fund does not cover emergency procedures.**

**Currently closed to new applications:** [Paws for Hope’s Better Together program](https://www.pawsforhope.org/what-we-do/better-together/) says it is at capacity. If you need help today, use one of the options above. Its program page is the place to check for reopening.

## If pet food and supplies are stretching your budget

[Charlie’s Pet Food Bank](https://spca.bc.ca/get-help/pet-care/food-bank-for-pet-food-and-supplies/) offers pet food and basic supplies in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. It runs **Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 543 Powell Street**. If that’s a difficult trip from Marpole, call the BC SPCA Animal Helpline at **[1-855-622-7722](tel:+18556227722)** and ask where you can get pet food closer to home.

## If you still can’t cover the estimate

Once the vet has examined your dog, ask: **“Which part needs to happen today? Is there anything that can safely wait? Could you write down the cost of each step?”** That gives you something concrete to discuss with the clinic or send with a funding application.

If the clinic offers financing, ask for the **total repayment amount**, including interest and fees, alongside the monthly payment. If friends or neighbours offer to help, ask whether they can contribute directly to your account at the clinic. For future visits, tell your vet what you can afford and ask which preventive care matters most for your dog. You don’t have to guess at those priorities on your own.
