# Best Dog Parks in South Vancouver

South Vancouver dog owners often compare parks by travel time, off-leash boundaries, terrain, water access, crowd levels, and how comfortable their dog is around other dogs.

- [5-Star Rated Local Service](https://marpoledogwalking.com/reviews/)

Our three most useful options to compare are Fraser River Park, Everett Crowley Park, and McDonald Beach Park. The first two are in Vancouver. McDonald Beach is in Richmond near Vancouver International Airport, but it is convenient enough for many Marpole dog owners to consider.

Park rules, boundaries, hours, and conditions can change. Check the official municipal page and posted signs before letting your dog off leash.

## Compare Fraser River, Everett Crowley and McDonald Beach

| Park | Often suits | Important trade-off |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fraser River Park | Dogs that enjoy open space, trails, and riverfront views | Not an official dog beach; off-leash boundaries are seasonal by area |
| Everett Crowley Park | Active dogs and owners who enjoy forested trails | Trails can be muddy, uneven, and busy |
| McDonald Beach Park | Dogs that enjoy a large off-leash setting near YVR | It is in Richmond, is unfenced, and the river is unsafe for swimming |

## 1. Fraser River Park

Fraser River Park is a useful South Vancouver option for dogs that enjoy open space, trails, and riverfront views. It is not an official dog beach or swimming destination, and dogs should stay on leash in riparian areas and near sensitive habitat.

The west side is off leash year-round, while the east side is off leash from October through April only. Watch posted boundaries, other park users, wildlife, shoreline conditions, and current safety notices. If your dog is uncomfortable in open or busy spaces, choose a quieter time or keep the dog leashed.

**Often suits:** Dogs with reliable recall that enjoy open space and varied terrain.
**Avoid if:** Your dog is water-obsessed, has poor recall, or needs fencing.
**Plan for:** Seasonal boundaries, riparian on-leash areas, other users, and an unfenced setting.

## 2. Everett Crowley Park

Everett Crowley Park offers a large, forested setting with an established dog area and a network of gravel and bark-mulch trails. It can provide more variety than a simple field, especially for dogs that enjoy walking, sniffing, and changing terrain.

Some trails can be muddy or uneven, particularly after rain. Dogs are allowed off leash only on designated trails and should not be near Avalon Pond. Keep your dog within sight and under control, respect on-leash boundaries, and slow down around other dogs, cyclists, walkers, or narrow trail sections.

**Often suits:** Active dogs and owners who enjoy forested walks.
**Avoid if:** Your dog has poor recall, chases wildlife, or needs full fencing.
**Plan for:** Mud, uneven surfaces, no dog drinking water, limited visibility on some trails, and mixed park use.

## 3. McDonald Beach Park – Richmond

McDonald Beach Park is a large off-leash option in Richmond near Vancouver International Airport, not in South Vancouver. It has long beach stretches, informal trails, picnic areas, and river views. Richmond lists the park and boat launch as open from sunrise to sunset.

The City of Richmond warns that the Fraser River at McDonald Beach is fast-moving, has a very strong current, and is unsafe for swimming. Do not treat it as a safe swimming destination for your dog. Follow the signed off-leash boundaries and keep close control near the shoreline, boat-launch area, and other park users.

**Often suits:** Dogs with reliable recall that enjoy a larger, unfenced area.
**Avoid if:** Your dog rushes toward water, boats, wildlife, or unfamiliar dogs.
**Plan for:** Strong river current, an unfenced setting, airport noise, boat activity, sunrise-to-sunset hours, and the drive into Richmond.

## Other South Vancouver Off-Leash Areas to Consider

| Area | Why consider it |
| --- | --- |
| Musqueam Park | A closer South Vancouver option to check when you want a simpler local outing. |
| Sunset Park | Worth checking if you specifically want a fenced off-leash area in South Vancouver. |
| Killarney Park | The south portion of the off-leash area is temporarily converted to a sport field during nearby construction. Dogs are not allowed on sport fields; confirm the current boundary before going. |
| Tecumseh Park, George Park, Sparwood Park, and Fraserview Golf Course areas | Smaller or more situational options; always confirm posted boundaries and hours before going. |

Killarney Park status checked November 6, 2026 on the [City of Vancouver dog off-leash areas page](https://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/dog-off-leash-areas.aspx).

## How to Choose the Right Park for Your Dog

The most popular park is not automatically the best fit. Consider:

- **Recall:** Can your dog return promptly when distracted?

- **Social comfort:** Does your dog enjoy unfamiliar dogs, or become tense or overwhelmed?

- **Fencing:** Would an unfenced area create unnecessary risk?

- **Mobility:** Are mud, hills, roots, gravel, or long distances suitable for you and your dog?

- **Water:** Are there current advisories, strong currents, or shoreline hazards?

- **Timing:** Would a quieter visit make the outing safer and more enjoyable?

- **Transport:** Is the drive and pickup routine realistic?

If your dog is reactive, fearful, newly adopted, elderly, recovering from an injury, or still developing recall, a structured on-leash walk may be more appropriate than a busy off-leash area.

## Vancouver Off-Leash Basics

The City of Vancouver requires dogs to remain leashed in public areas unless they are inside a designated off-leash area. Owners must keep dogs under control, pick up waste, and hold a valid dog licence. Dogs should be leashed when entering and leaving designated off-leash areas.

Rules differ between Vancouver and Richmond. Check the responsible municipality’s current page before visiting.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Are all parts of these parks off leash?

No. Off-leash permission applies only in designated areas and may be subject to posted boundaries or times. Check signs on arrival.

### Which option is actually in South Vancouver?

Fraser River Park and Everett Crowley Park are in Vancouver. McDonald Beach Park is in Richmond near YVR and is included as a nearby option for Marpole-area dog owners.

### Is McDonald Beach safe for dog swimming?

No. Do not let your dog swim there. The City of Richmond warns that the Fraser River there is fast-moving, has a very strong current, and is unsafe for swimming.

### What should I bring?

Bring a leash, water, waste bags, identification, and a towel when conditions are wet or muddy. Keep your phone available for current municipal notices, but stay attentive to your dog.

### When should I avoid an off-leash park?

Avoid it when your dog cannot reliably return, is ill or injured, becomes overwhelmed around unfamiliar dogs, or when posted conditions make the area unsuitable. Ask your veterinarian about individual health or vaccination concerns.

Leave with one recorded question, the evidence you have and a next action. Unknown is a useful answer; a completed note does not confirm eligibility, suitability or an arrangement.

Fictional example: A familiar on-leash loop is my first option. If the crossing or path is too busy, I will take the shorter return rather than finish a fixed distance.
